Amsterdam cruise dock
Most of the cruise ships dock at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), conveniently located in the city center within walking distance from Amsterdam central station and city attractions. Housed in a modern, wave-like glass building, PTA has 2 berths that can accommodate ships up to 630 m combined length. You probably do not have to use public transportation in front of the Central Station.
It’s a MUST-HAVE if you are spending a day or two in the city. In mid-July 2022, was announced that in 2025 cruise ships docking at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam will start using shore power. In November 2017, the port announced its objectives to achieve up to 50% emissions reduction (NOx, SOx, soot particles) generated by docked ocean cruise ships by the year 2030. Another planned objective was reducing to virtually zero the levels of noise and air pollution caused by diesel generators at all public berths (located inside the city's ring road) by 2018. Port Amsterdam’s main cruise port terminal is known as Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, located within walking distance from Amsterdam downtown.

The Port of Amsterdam is conveniently located just a short distance from many popular attractions such as Dam Square and the Red Light District. Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) is the city’s official port for cruise ships. An eye-catching building on the IJ River, PTA welcomes about 200,000 passengers annually and also serves as an impressive event venue. Tugged away on Spui square you will find a little portal that goes into the Begijnhof. It is a 14th century courtyard with a small church and little houses.

It has a unique history, large canal ring, world-famous museums, a huge selection of guided city tours and shore excursions. Muziekgebouw aan het IJ, a concert hall for jazz and modern music, is adjacent to the terminal, and ongoing construction will bring many more amenities, including hotels. There is a fairytale quality to the tree-lined canal streets of Amsterdam. Boutiques, cafes, apartments and hotels may hide behind the facades of the gabled townhouses, but the look of this beautiful old city has not changed much since its 17th-century Golden Age. No matter how many times you walk along the canals, they are enchanting to see, even when traffic and whizzing bicycles dispel the Old-World illusion.

Amsterdam’s city council has decided to close a cruise ship terminal in its centre, in the latest attempt to limit mass tourism in the Dutch capital. Unfortunately, you cannot purchase a V-chipkaart at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam Cruise Port. However, you can easily purchase one from any major public transportation station in Amsterdam or online before your trip. The cruise port is located about 11 kilometers (7 miles) from the nearest beach, which is Zandvoort Beach. This popular seaside destination can be easily reached by train or bus from Amsterdam Central Station. The canals of Amsterdam, picturesque streets, and rich history make it a unique and memorable place to explore.
Visit the only Museum with a road inside of it but not for cars, only for bicycles. The Rijksmuseum features almost one million objects but only 8000 pieces of artwork are displayed including several of Rembrandt’s portraits and his famous “Night Watch”. The second floor houses the largest library in the Netherlands.
The best way to explore it is by foot or bicycle due to its narrow alleys. Here you can find selected museums, small cafes, souvenir shops and of course the famous ¨coffee shops¨ and red light window shops. The city's multitude of river cruise vessels dock behind the Central Station on the River IJ, along a long street called de Ruyterkade. Major museums and the classic Concertgebouw concert hall are near the Museumplein, just beyond the canals. Waterlooplein is home to the Jewish Museum, the Muziektheater, the city's handsome concert hall, and Amsterdam's biggest flea market; the Hermitage museum and Rembrandt's House are also nearby. The Jordaan, a bohemian neighborhood with unusual shops and galleries, can be found by looking for the Westerkerk Church and the Anne Frank House.
The terminal handles over 250,000 passengers during high season. For FY2019, Port Amsterdam reported a record transshipment volume of 86,3 million tonnes (6% increase over 2018's 82,3M tonnes). In mid-December 2018 started construction works on the Plastic Recycling Amsterdam project - a partnership with Umincorp (Rotterdam-based) and Milieu Service Nederland (Diemen-based). The new recycling plant has an annual capacity of 17,000 tons. The collected plastics are washed, shredded, separated (via Magnetic Density Separation), then sorted and processed into packaging materials. Port Amsterdam (officially "Haven van Amsterdam", locode NLAMS) is a major seaport serving Amsterdam City.
