cruise ships to alaska

One of the most magical ways to explore Alaska’s expansive coastline, stunning snow-capped mountains, mystic fjords, lush rainforests, awe-inspiring glaciers, and protected wildlife is by sea. And that’s precisely why so many people who visit Alaska do so via a cruise. Plus, it’s the best way to experience the iconic Inside Passage, the most popular route for cruise ships departing from Seattle and Vancouver from May through September.

Crowne Plaza Seattle

Interior staterooms are budget-friendly options with plenty of space and thoughtful touches, or you can upgrade to ocean view, balcony, or suite categories for some extra perks (like marble bathrooms with a tub and two sinks). And there’s no better spot for taking in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier than the North Star observation deck. Book a spa treatment or work out in the Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center, play nine holes of golf on the putting greens, shop the three boutiques, and unwind, help yourself to afternoon tea with all the accouterments at 4 p.m. The Millennium offers Edge series staterooms with Infinite Veranda—at the touch of a button, your entire living space becomes the veranda, which means you can walk right out to the water’s edge. And 99% of the staterooms on Celebrity Edge have king-size beds, featuring Celebrity eXhale bedding and Cashmere mattresses.

Back on board, Gabree recommends The Chef’s Table for a truly memorable meal — and I, too, can attest to this. While on board a Caribbean sailing with the cruise line, I had the chance to indulge in this chef- and sommelier-led multi-course food and wine pairing adventure. Four years later, I still find myself dreaming of the delicious circular-shaped dessert known as “The World” — the perfect combo of peanut butter ganache, chocolate mousse, and salted caramel gelato).

It's important to us to pay our respects while offering to build mutual understanding across cultures. All of our Alaska cruisetours include a stay at our premier Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge®, just one mile from the entrance of Denali National Park overlooking the Nenana River. Access some of the most stunning sights on earth — wilderness, wildlife and untamed land.

Top 10 Alaska Cruises

Cruise itineraries are generally seven to ten days, typically departing from Seattle or Vancouver, BC. Alaska land and sea cruise packages include round-trip or one-way itineraries, and often include post-cruise land tour options on a train or motorcoach for travelers wanting to continue their Alaska exploration. The most popular time to cruise is June – August, and cruises typically run May – September.

But if you want to sail to some more remote areas of Alaska, consider a cruise on a small vessel. A cruise to Alaska, as opposed to a land trip, also enables you to maximize the many landscapes you can experience quickly. Cruise season in Alaska is from late spring to early fall, so there are plenty of options for you to embark on a truly memorable trip in North America's Pacific Northwest. The fun continues the minute cruisers disembark in each port, with excursions ranging from dogsledding to private helicopter tours.

Because of their small, yacht-like size, Windstar Cruises ships grant unparalleled access to Alaska’s glaciers and fjords; other ships can’t squeeze into some of these special places. Between the natural masterpieces and the animate personalities, every part of Alaska tells an extraordinary story. On an Alaska cruisetour with Princess, discover what makes the Great Land so special, and craft your own tales of your time on land and sea. With glass-domed railcars, our exclusive Direct-to-the-Wilderness® rail service takes you into the heart of Alaska without juggling multiple tickets or confusing transfers. Enjoy convenience and comfort from ship to train and then directly to your Princess Wilderness Lodge in the Denali-area.

We’ve been sharing the wonders of Alaska longer than any other cruise line. See the best of the Great Land’s glaciers, coastal towns and wildlife on board perfectly sized ships offering superior service and exclusive programming. Explore the dynamic glaciers, soaring peaks and captivating history of the 49th state on our award-winning itineraries. Rush across the snow on a dog sled with a professional musher, fly fish for salmon in fresh rivers and soar over miles of glacial tundra in a helicopter. Watch migrating humpback whales from the deck of a catamaran or Native craftsman carve a traditional totem pole, and expand your Alaska cruise experience. With national parks and four of North America’s tallest mountains, Alaska’s wilderness has been preserved for generations.

The line’s identical ocean ships offer a sleek Scandinavian design, which only enhances the tranquil atmosphere on board. The luxury adults-only line is also all-inclusive, covering meals, activities, most beverages, Wi-Fi, port taxes and fees, spa access, and one complimentary excursion in every port of call. Cruisers can bask in the mountain and glacier views from the comfort of their private balcony — and, if they’re lucky, they may even spot a whale or two. Finally, in addition to classic ports like Juneau and Ketchikan, Viking Ocean Cruises’ Alaska itinerary also calls on Valdez, which is chock-full of natural beauty and outdoor adventure.

Alaska cruisetours combine our top-rated Voyage of the Glaciers cruise with three to ten nights on land exploring Denali National Park. Travel aboard our exclusive Direct-to-the-Wilderness® train and unwind at Princess Wilderness Lodges®. Every year Princess introduces more people to Denali National Park than any other cruise line.

Cruises & Cruise Holidays

cruise 2023 all-inclusive

Award-winning luxury lines Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, and Silversea, all with multiple ships, offer the most inclusions in cruise fares. Upper-premium cruise lines, particularly award-winning Viking, bundle more amenities into cruise prices than other non-luxury lines. The Experience More on Short Cruises package is the only one available on sailings of seven days or fewer. Two passengers sharing a cabin must both select Have It All at the time of booking. Unlike most cruise all-inclusive packages, however, HAL's Have It All doesn't include crew gratuities.

best all-inclusive cruise lines

Innovative cabins let fresh air in without creating under-used outdoor space. The line has also gotten creative with options for more inclusive fares. Also included in every Azamara guest's fares are nonalcoholic drinks (such as specialty coffees and teas, soda and bottled water), as well as an assortment of standard liquors, wine and beer. Crew gratuities and self-service laundry are also included in your fare.

Create Your All-Inclusive Cruise Package

The majority of all river cruise sailings have few, if any, children onboard. They also tend to have more inclusive fares that include beer, wine and soda at dinner, plus at least some shore excursions, along with Wi-Fi and bicycle use generally included. The pioneer of all-inclusive cruises has added new extras to build upon an already stellar program.

Princess® MedallionClass®

The only major add-ons to your tab are airfare and shore excursions, the fanciest wines and spirits, and spa and salon treatments. Create an all-inclusive cruise experience by combining our vacation packages to elevate your vacation to the next level. With our standard cruise-only rate, you’ll get to enjoy a stay in one of our spacious staterooms, delicious gourmet meals at our restaurants, and a slate of activities and entertainment shows—without ever worrying about the tab.

Best for an intimate cruising experience

There is a refined simplicity about how Viking operates their cruises. All-Inclusive cruise lines coming soon:

The small-ship line, which is known for both its sleek “Star Plus Class” ships and its classic vessels with their dramatic sails, also has an array of itineraries along the coast of Australia and in the South Pacific. Silversea gives Antarctica travelers the option to skip two days of sailing the often-rocky Drake Passage. Instead, they can fly in comfort over the waters separating South America from the continent, then hop aboard the 127-suite Silver Cloud and 100-suite Silver Endeavour for trips along the frosty coastline. In June, Quasar Expeditions is offering a Galápagos cruise on the 32-passenger Evolution for children with autism spectrum disorder, hosted by an expert in supporting families with special needs. The trip, which departs June 24, is a seven-night expedition that takes in many of the most notable sites on the islands, with programming specially tailored for both kids and adults. The Alaska trips on Ocean Victory, a fuel-efficient, 93-cabin ship from American Queen Voyages, come with the opportunity to kayak past glaciers and spot bald eagles and grizzlies.

Best for immersive experiences

The cost to make your cruise all-inclusive is $55 per person per day, added to your cruise fare, and applies only to the first and second guests in each cabin. The Love Boat cruise line explores the world on big, but not too big ships, with a particular focus on Alaska sailings. It welcomes everyone from families with kids to retired couples with a variety of onboard offerings and inclusive fare options to suit a variety of budgets and preferences. River cruising also includes the above, except it does not offer alternative restaurant dining, thermal suite spa access, 24-hour room service or self-service launderettes on board.

For example, the S.E.A. restaurant offers a seven-course menu that is paired with wine, but it comes with a $285 cover charge. WiFi is included in the price of your stay, but you can upgrade to a faster speed for an additional fee of $38 per day. The smaller 28,000 and 40,000 gross ton ships that have fewer than 600 guests allow for travel to remote and exotic locations all over the world.

Or maybe you have a particular destination in mind, like a Caribbean cruise or cruise to Alaska. No matter which cruise line you love or which destination speaks to you, there's a deal out there for you. As the most discerning, up-to-the-minute voice in all things travel, Condé Nast Traveler is the global citizen’s bible and muse, offering both inspiration and vital intel. We understand that time is the greatest luxury, which is why Condé Nast Traveler mines its network of experts and influencers so that you never waste a meal, a drink, or a hotel stay wherever you are in the world. Scenic currently offers one “adventure yacht,” Scenic Eclipse, with near-twin Scenic Eclipse II debuting in 2023.

Finally, the once-per-sailing exclusive program will immerse guests even further into the local culture, through experiences such as dining in a local resident’s home in Bratislava or attending a private concert in the Rhine Valley. Right now, the Have It All package costs $350 per person for a seven-night cruise, which is actually less than the $384.65 Holland America charges for its Signature beverage package for a cruise of this length. Plus, passengers get an extra $230 to $245 in shore excursion, specialty dining and Wi-Fi perks. So, at the $50 per person, per day rate, the Have It All Package is a terrific value, even for moderate drinkers. This choice aims to eliminate all travel stress, with Silversea handling every detail between your walking out your front door and returning home. Five lines stand out for having the most inclusive cruise fares in the industry.

Along with their 5 expedition ships, Silversea sails to over 900 destinations. This includes Antarctica, Greenland, Africa and the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean, the Galapagos Islands, the South Pacific, and almost anywhere you can imagine. What if all that opulence and fancy luxury isn’t for you, but you still want an all-inclusive cruise and the chance to learn something about the world along the way? Whether it’s a river cruise or ocean cruise, Viking could fit the bill, all while allowing you to leave your cruise card in your pocket for just about everything.

How to access the terminal? Cruise Port Amsterdam

amsterdam cruise ship terminal

This terminal is located in an industrial area, however within walking distance to a large marina with a Holiday Inn hotel and several so-so restaurants and outdoor cafes. A little further is the wide beach with many outdoor cafe's and restaurants and can be very enjoyable on a nice day. Cruises arrive and depart from the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam which is close to Amsterdam Central station and has easy access to the city centre.

Today, it is Netherlands' second-largest cargo port - after Rotterdam. Port's 2014 statistics showed as handled marine shipping cargo ~97,4 million tons. For comparison, in 2008 the port handled 6029 marine vessels with 75,8 million tons of cargo and 435,129 TEUs (containers). Take a trip to the most popular attraction located in the north of the capital, approximately 18 km/11 miles (a 25-minute drive) from the cruise port Amsterdam.

The breathtaking Keukenhof is the world’s largest flower garden and the most visited attraction during the summer, welcoming over a million visitors per year. To get to the Heineken Brewery, take tram 24 at Central Station and get off at the Stadhouderskade stop. Guests with mobility challenges are welcome as the museum is wheelchair-friendly.

Amsterdam cruise dock

Most of the cruise ships dock at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), conveniently located in the city center within walking distance from Amsterdam central station and city attractions. Housed in a modern, wave-like glass building, PTA has 2 berths that can accommodate ships up to 630 m combined length. You probably do not have to use public transportation in front of the Central Station.

It’s a MUST-HAVE if you are spending a day or two in the city. In mid-July 2022, was announced that in 2025 cruise ships docking at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam will start using shore power. In November 2017, the port announced its objectives to achieve up to 50% emissions reduction (NOx, SOx, soot particles) generated by docked ocean cruise ships by the year 2030. Another planned objective was reducing to virtually zero the levels of noise and air pollution caused by diesel generators at all public berths (located inside the city's ring road) by 2018. Port Amsterdam’s main cruise port terminal is known as Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, located within walking distance from Amsterdam downtown.

The Port of Amsterdam is conveniently located just a short distance from many popular attractions such as Dam Square and the Red Light District. Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) is the city’s official port for cruise ships. An eye-catching building on the IJ River, PTA welcomes about 200,000 passengers annually and also serves as an impressive event venue. Tugged away on Spui square you will find a little portal that goes into the Begijnhof. It is a 14th century courtyard with a small church and little houses.

Night Europe - Northern CapitalsDetails

It has a unique history, large canal ring, world-famous museums, a huge selection of guided city tours and shore excursions. Muziekgebouw aan het IJ, a concert hall for jazz and modern music, is adjacent to the terminal, and ongoing construction will bring many more amenities, including hotels. There is a fairytale quality to the tree-lined canal streets of Amsterdam. Boutiques, cafes, apartments and hotels may hide behind the facades of the gabled townhouses, but the look of this beautiful old city has not changed much since its 17th-century Golden Age. No matter how many times you walk along the canals, they are enchanting to see, even when traffic and whizzing bicycles dispel the Old-World illusion.

A taxi to the city centre should cost you around 10 euros one way. Any taxi ride within the Amsterdam city area should cost you between 10 and 18 euro. Adventures by Disney unveils new river cruises in Holland and Belgium for 2025

Amsterdam’s city council has decided to close a cruise ship terminal in its centre, in the latest attempt to limit mass tourism in the Dutch capital. Unfortunately, you cannot purchase a V-chipkaart at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam Cruise Port. However, you can easily purchase one from any major public transportation station in Amsterdam or online before your trip. The cruise port is located about 11 kilometers (7 miles) from the nearest beach, which is Zandvoort Beach. This popular seaside destination can be easily reached by train or bus from Amsterdam Central Station. The canals of Amsterdam, picturesque streets, and rich history make it a unique and memorable place to explore.

Visit the only Museum with a road inside of it but not for cars, only for bicycles. The Rijksmuseum features almost one million objects but only 8000 pieces of artwork are displayed including several of Rembrandt’s portraits and his famous “Night Watch”. The second floor houses the largest library in the Netherlands.

The best way to explore it is by foot or bicycle due to its narrow alleys. Here you can find selected museums, small cafes, souvenir shops and of course the famous ¨coffee shops¨ and red light window shops. The city's multitude of river cruise vessels dock behind the Central Station on the River IJ, along a long street called de Ruyterkade. Major museums and the classic Concertgebouw concert hall are near the Museumplein, just beyond the canals. Waterlooplein is home to the Jewish Museum, the Muziektheater, the city's handsome concert hall, and Amsterdam's biggest flea market; the Hermitage museum and Rembrandt's House are also nearby. The Jordaan, a bohemian neighborhood with unusual shops and galleries, can be found by looking for the Westerkerk Church and the Anne Frank House.

The terminal handles over 250,000 passengers during high season. For FY2019, Port Amsterdam reported a record transshipment volume of 86,3 million tonnes (6% increase over 2018's 82,3M tonnes). In mid-December 2018 started construction works on the Plastic Recycling Amsterdam project - a partnership with Umincorp (Rotterdam-based) and Milieu Service Nederland (Diemen-based). The new recycling plant has an annual capacity of 17,000 tons. The collected plastics are washed, shredded, separated (via Magnetic Density Separation), then sorted and processed into packaging materials. Port Amsterdam (officially "Haven van Amsterdam", locode NLAMS) is a major seaport serving Amsterdam City.

How to Choose the Best Alaska Cruise Route

princess cruise lines alaska

You’ve seen the advertisements and marketing campaigns, but are they really the best cruise line in Alaska? Well, we’ve just returned from our 5th Alaska cruise, 2nd with Princess, and want to share our thoughts with you. In this post, we detail the pros and cons of sailing Princess Cruises to Alaska. If you are considering a cruise to the Last Frontier, we detail the pros and cons of sailing Princess Cruises to Alaska.

National treasures

It’s important to book as far in advance as you can to ensure your vacation isn’t affected by your first option being sold out. The weather in Alaska changes quickly and dramatically and can vary widely depending on where in the state you are. On one day alone in Denali National Park on the land portion of our tour, it rained and snowed before the sun peeked out from behind the clouds all in a matter of an hour. And in the south on the cruise portion, I was hot walking around Juneau in a T-shirt. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site.

Deadliest Catch

Located riverside next to some of the most renowned national parks, these warm and welcoming lodges are the perfect spot to bask in Alaska’s best attractions. As a part of your Alaska cruisetour, explore and unwind with comforting amenities and breathtaking scenery.

Best Dishes to Try on Your Alaska Cruise

Given the number of ships and departure points, this allows the cruise line to offer a variety of cruise lengths as well beyond the traditional 7-day cruise. Guests even have the option to extend the cruise with a land tour, but more on that in a bit. While most of our cruises have been roundtrip from Seattle or Vancouver, our recent Majestic Princess cruise was our first one-way sailing. We really enjoyed getting to experience a bit more of the region with this itinerary. Given the number of Princess Cruises ships sailing to Alaska, this allows the cruise line to offer a variety of itineraries.

Princess wilderness lodges

Steps away from the heart of the city, lakes and calving glaciers invite visitors to take in the scenery by boat, plane or train. Or hop onto a charming trolley for a 15-mile exploration of Anchorage’s past and present. Extend your Alaska cruise vacation, and simplify your travel plans with a hotel stay at the beginning or end of your cruise.

Whether you prefer to traverse by land, sea or air, our cruise excursions in Alaska will bring you on a wild ride. There’s a world of sights to be seen in the Great Land and our Alaska cruise excursions give you a front-row seat to it all. Bring history books to life when you tour Skagway, the former gateway to the gold rush, and visit Gold Dredge 8 in Fairbanks to learn even more about mining. Travel along the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway, or aboard a riverboat sternwheeler for sweeping views of Alaska’s greatest treasures.

Airplane to Ship Transfer

Each day, you can fill out a form listing what items you’d like to order and what time they should be delivered, so that’s convenient. From our own private balcony to picture windows throughout the ship to expansive decks, the views just kept coming. “You see pictures but to see it in person is just like, it’s hard to believe this is even real.

Yes, that means the dreaded clingy shower curtain while you are trying to bathe. While showering on a cruise ship is never ideal, this makes the situation even worse. Princess Cruises has also added a third pricing option, Princess Premier. The Princess Premier package is the most inclusive offering and is $80 per person, per day to upgrade. This package includes the Premier Beverage Package, WiFi for 4 devices per guest, Crew Appreciation, and two specialty dining meals per guest.

New To Cruising

Adventure through Chugach National Forest, cruise past Kenai Fjords National Parks’ glaciers or fish along the Kenai River. Take in the sights of this natural masterpiece at a leisurely pace only on an Alaska cruisetour. On our Alaska shore excursions, step back in time to learn how these traditions came to fruition and how they're practiced today. Attend a lumberjack axe-throwing competition, watch a Native dance performance and excite your taste buds at a salmon bake with locals. Or watch a craftsmen thoughtfully carve totem poles at a Native Alaskan village. Unlock a world of adventure with Discovery at SEA™, our exclusive partnership with Discovery™ and Animal Planet™.

With some of the most stunning wilderness in existence and famous wildlife, it’s part of the definitive experience of traveling to the Great Land’s wild interior. Sail 500 miles deeper into the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound on our top-rated Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise vacation. Spend seven days traveling from Anchorage (Whittier) to Vancouver, B.C., stopping in historic port cities like Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. Along the way, enjoy two glacier-viewing experiences on every itinerary – including Glacier Bay National Park, and Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord. With Princess, you won’t just explore Alaska’s landscapes, you’ll live amidst them in our custom-built wilderness lodges.

While most cruise lines do offer onboard enrichment opportunities when cruising to Alaska, Princess Cruises features an entire North to Alaska program of specially curated activities. These opportunities usually include talks by locals and experts on topics such as history, Alaskan culture, and wildlife of the region. It will visit a number of ports, including Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Seattle, Icy Strait Point and Sitka, Alaska, and Victoria, British Columbia. Cruisers will also enjoy scenic cruising of Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier, Hubbard Glacier, and Glacier Bay National Park.

At first glance many mistake Victoria for an English coastal city or northern European town. Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure. On an Alaska cruise, take your pick of attractions in the port of Sitka. See how bald eagles and local bird populations receive first-class treatment at the Alaska Raptor Center.

Of course, Alaska cruises are more about the destination than they are the ship anyway. Guests can upgrade from the Princess Standard fare to the Princess Plus package for $60 per person, per day. This package includes the crew incentive (also known as gratuities), WiFi for one device per guest, and the Plus Beverage package.

With more and more travelers never fully disconnecting on vacation and even working remotely, we think the extra seating area is essential. Personally, one of our biggest cons of sailing with Princess Cruises to Alaska is the lackluster entry level staterooms. After 65 cruises with various cruise lines, there are some things that we have come to expect in our usual balcony cabins. This means that you might need to upgrade your accommodations which can increase your Alaska cruise costs.
